NAUTICAL DECOR: WHERE TO START

This is the first piece in a series on creating a nautically themed home or room. It’s an introduction to help you start and will be followed by future posts that take the most enthusiastic among you through the process of designing a nautically themed home.
To get things started, I’d like to ask you a question.
What is the ultimate symbol for the captain of a ship?

THE SHIP WHEEL

For me, the ship wheel is the obvious answer. It’s one of the main mechanisms under the captains control. As a symbol, there is nothing quite like it. So, if you’re wondering where to start this is it.
As a decorative piece, the ship wheel can stand by itself, as a reminder of sailing or it can be the center piece of a full nautical theme. You can hang it on the wall, like a picture, or put it on the mantle to inspire anyone who sets foot in the room.

THE ANCHOR

An anchor is a great choice for a second piece. It shows steadfastness and stability. As a symbol, it’s almost as strong as the wheel. The two together are an ideal combination.
You can go as big or as subtle as you like. A door knocker would complement the theme without making the anchor the center of attention. Or, you could go big by putting it up on the mantle and choosing a smaller ship wheel.
No matter what combination you choose, these two classic symbols are the perfect start to your nautical theme.

NAUTICAL ART

Ok, so far we have been focusing on symbols of ships. These basics are a great place to start but now it’s time to bring this theme together by getting more personal.
So, I have a couple questions for you to think about.
What is most inspiring to you? Why do you want a nautical theme?
You may not be an artist, but there is probably some kind of art work out there to capture your perspective on a nautical life and why it matters to you.
Are you inspired by a captain guiding a ship in a treacherous storm? How about a ship itself, out in the ocean, sail raised high. Maybe you want to go in a completely different direction. You may be inspired by the ocean itself or by a particular destination. How about a beach or a sunset?
I challenge you to really give this some thought and determine what is most inspiring to you. Remember, this is your home we are talking about. This will be the most visual and specific thing that you see so make sure to take the time to truly choose something which will inspire you, your family and anyone who visits.
